I have recently been reading a specific author: Brandon Sanderson. He writes Science Fiction/Fantasy novels and is brilliant in both imagery and style. He's got many award winning books, but I do warn you that the books are not child-like. The Way of Kings, the first 1,000+ page epic of 10, is his best work.
I suggest you try him out, especially The Way of Kings. You can find a free PDF file on the internet if you want to try it out.
